Simbolurile de stat

Imnul de stat - Limba noastrã has been since 1994 the national anthem of the Republic of Moldova. Before that, its official anthem was Desteaptã-te, române!, which is also the national anthem of Romania. The lyrics are from Alexei Mateevici (1888-1917) and the music was composed by Alexandru Cristea (1890-1942). The original poem contains twelve stanzas, five of which have been kept for the anthem.

Drapelul Republicii Moldova

Conform regulamentului cu privire la Drapelul de Stat aprobat prinHotarirea Parlamentului nr. 17-XII din 12 mai 1990, Vestile nr.5/93,1990, Drapelul de Stat al Republicii Moldova – Tricolorul – este simbolul oficial al Republicii Moldova. El simbolizeaza trecutul, prezentul si viitorul statului moldovenesc, reflecta principiile lui democratice, traditia istorica a poporului moldovenesc, egalitatea in drepturi, prietenia si solidaritatea tuturor cetatenilor republicii.

Design of the flag

Romania/Moldova adopted a flag in the three colours during the revolutions of 1848 which drew inspiration (and vexillology) from the French revolution.

The old medieval principality of Moldova had a red military flag with a bison's (not ox's, as you think) head in the center. The bison is a symbol of Moldova and as old chronicles said means "power, independence and pride". This head you can see on our coat of arms. The three colors of Romanian and Moldovan flags were proposed in 1848 and represented three part of Romania:

* Red - Moldova,
* Blue - Oltenia (east Wallachia)
* Yellow - Muntenia (west Wallachia)

In modern Romania the colors represent Moldova, Transylvania and Wallachia. The colors of our flag only copy those of the Romanian flag as a symbol of common roots.




"I am a Bassarabian or Moldovan as we are known these days and I would like to correct some of the information that my fellow Bassarabian has given you. First of all our flag represents the fact that we, Moldovans are the same as the Romanians.The tricolour and the eagle shows the same latin routes and the same ancestors. Bassarabia used to be part of the Principality of Moldova and at one point it even used to be part of the Kingdom of Romania. The flag shows that we hope one day that we could be one with our true homeland, Romania."

The current flag of Moldova was established in 1990 and Symbolised both Romanian origin and wish to reunification (at the time most of non-communist Moldovan politicians wanted to reunite). But it is turned out that most part of Moldovan population do not support they aspirations. Now Moldova is fully independent state and has no intentions to become part of Romania.

The colours and design of Moldovan flag is indeed intended to show proximity and kin to Romania, and it can not be denyed. It may be that a hope for a unification is also suggested in it, but as far as I know that is not the imidiate intention nor a political option whidely supported in Moldova (but surely it exists).

Anyway, it is not unusual and unheard, quite contrary, that the flags have symbolism of some idealistic hopes (or even assumption of some neighbouring parts), without the explicit imidiate political request (or treath). The case that first come to mind is central-americal "wish" for unification clearly expressed in their flags (and COAs), but without any imidiate political meaning and support. The "pan" colours (panslavene, panarab, panafircan...) could also be read that way, without making much of political meaning in this moment of history.

If I am not wrong, Moldovan-Romanian unification might easily be set into such "ideal" category.

STEMA DE STAT A REPUBLICII MOLDOVA (Regulamentul cu privire la Stema de Stat a fost aprobat prin Legea nr.337-XII din 3 noiembrie 1990, Vestile nr. 11/267, 1990)

Stema de Stat a Republicii Moldova reprezinta un scut taiat pe orizontala avind in partea superioara cromatica rosie, in cea inferioara – albastra, incarcat cu capul de bour avind intre coarne o stea cu opt raze. Capul de bour este flancat in dreapta de o roza cu cinci petale, iar in stinga de o semiluna conturnata. Toate elementele reprezentate in scut sint de aur (galbene). Scutul este plasat pe pieptul unei acvile naturale purtind in cioc o cruce de aur (acvila cruciala) si tinind in gheara dreapta o ramura verde de maslin, iar in stinga un sceptru de aur.

From what I have read (an Encyclopedia Americana flag article written by Whitney Smith) the coat of arms is an eagle holding a cross in its beak and an olive branch and scepter in its claws. On top of the eagle is a shield "perfess" (split in half horizontally) red on top and blue below, with a stylized ox head over all between a rose and a cresent. The eagle is from the old Romanian coat of arms and ultimately from Byzantium; the ox head represents the old province of Bessarabia; the cross is obviously Christian; the scepter and olive branch are probably for sovereignty and peace; as for the flower and cresent, I have no idea.

Stema Basarabiei s-a modificat de-a lungul istoriei dupa cum urmeaza.

publicat în 1701, această provincie era desemnată printr-un scut pe care se aflau trei capete de negri legate cu o eşarfă. Se indica astfel faptul că teritoriul respectiv era stăpânit de către tătari.
Trebuie precizat că la acel moment Basarabia însemna doar sudul teritoriului dintre Prut şi Nistru, suprapus în mare parte peste Bugeac.

Stema Basarabiei stabilită prin 1815 - 1817 cuprindea un scut tăiat, aur în cartierul superior şi albastru în cel inferior, Stema Basarabiei, aşa cum a fost stabilită iniţial sub stăpânirea ţaristă

În primul cartier se află stema imperiului: acvila bicefală, împodobită cu o coroană de aur, ţine în ghearele ei sceptrul şi globul crucifer. În cartierul albastru este reprezentată vechea stemă a Moldovei: capul de bour. Conform aprobărilor imperiale din 27 martie şi 13 aprilie 1826, această reprezentare a suferit mici modificări: cartierele sunt de data aceasta roşu (sus) şi aur (jos), iar acvila ţine în gheara dreaptă o făclie şi un fulger, iar în cea stângă o cunună de lauri. Pe pieptul ei se află reprezentat un scut roşu cu Sfântul Mare Mucenic Gheorghe ucigând balaurul cu suliţa, de pe calul alb.

În 1878 înfăţişarea stemei a fost schimbată radical. Pe un scut albastru a fost înfăţişat capul de bour, având ochii, limba şi coarnele de culoare roşie. Între coarnele sale a fost plasată o stea cu cinci raze şi el a fost flancat de o roză (în dreapta) şi o semilună (în stânga). Scutul a fost bordat cu culorile Romanovilor: aur, argint şi negru.

În 1918, pe actele unirii cu România, a fost utilizată vechea stemă a voievodatului Moldovei.

După cel de-Al Doilea Război Mondial, majoritatea Basarabiei a fost transformată în republică sovietică socialistă. Noua entitate a primit o stemă în concordanţă cu celelalte din U.R.S.S., fără legătură cu trecutul istoric.

Evenimentele ce au avut loc în această ţară după 1989 au determinat alcătuirea unei noi steme, pentru a desemna statul suveran abia creat. Astfel, stema Republicii Moldova a reluat, în componenţa ei, vechiul cap de bour.
